Decades ago when I studied early vision, I felt like the logic of progress in the field was a bit too formulaic (show an exceedingly well-established model is incomplete and extend it). Today I'm envying those for whom scientific progress has a logic that their community generally agrees on.

Well said, Joe LeDoux. 10 years ago me would probably regard this as bonkers. Until you sit down to puzzle through questions about emotion/mood (and mental suffering), it’s easy to take one of two sides but the answers most likely lie in the middle. /1 www.jneurosci.org/content/46/2...

My colleague @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social is amazing on so many levels. The ethos of our era (including the makers of big budget films like Christopher Nolan) recognize that but I sometimes encounter those who missed the memo. If you don’t know Emily, here’s an intro. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_W...

My Odyssey and Iliad translations are available as audiobooks, read/ performed by very talented real people: Claire Danes and Audra MacDonald. They do a much better job than the robots! www.audible.com/pd/The-Iliad...

Fascinating and important. Including the provocative finding “What we believe about our bodily sensing may have little to do with how we actually sense it.” A place where subject report diverges (read the thread). Congrats to this team!!

Sensing your body (‘Interoception’) is everywhere in theories of mental health. But when we tested how well hundreds of people sensed their heart and lungs, the link to symptoms was almost nowhere to be found. 💣 🚨New @natmentalhealth.nature.com paper 🚨🎉 asks why 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s44...

Crowdsourcing: Where can I find good summaries of midbrain dopamine neurons? Starting with response properties including phasic/tonic responses, comparisons across species, etc. Thanks!

This era is an exceedingly frustrating superposition of things like this (how informative and exciting!!) superimposed on … /1
