With higher naturalization fees, longer tests, doubling denial rates, “neighborhood investigations,” slow processing and denaturalizations, Trump officials are making U.S. citizenship harder to acquire and easier to revoke. @mclem.org @douglasrivlin.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...

In a conclusion aimed at pleasing Stephen Miller rather than Donald Trump, a White House report criticizes the immigration of scientists, arguing it’s bad whether international students earning PhD’s stay or leave after graduating. @mclem.org @douglasrivlin.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...
Very interesting new commentary by Tatiana Stanovaya @ceip-politika.bsky.social: “It Has Begun: On a New Crossroads for the Putin Regime.” Key claim is that there has been a “tectonic shift” in Russia, “where the elite is beginning to realize that ‘the cat isn’t catching any mice’.” 1/5
A story in three acts. Act 1: In February, George Borjas released a paper justifying the US President's $100,000 H-1B tax. www.nber.org/papers/w34793 Below is that version's mandatory @nber.org disclosure section, when it was released in February and revised in March.
The costs of international student exclusion will be vast and permanent. It will harm all Conservative Americans and their children; it will harm all Liberal Americans and their children. It is the exact opposite of what our tech-driven economy needs. I summarize my research at @piie.com —>
One third of all PhD STEM workers in the US are immigrants who studied at a US university. Today the US Administration extended its efforts to slash high-skill immigration, undermining foreign students' trust that they can complete their degrees & work afterwards. My new piece at @brookings.edu —>
Intl. students, including PhDs, must finish degrees in 4 years. The only assurance from DHS in new rule is the right to file an extension. NFAP’s Mark Regets asks, “How is that a genuine assurance? Why take a chance on a US education?” @mclem.org @adamposen.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...
A human rights lawyer fled China and came legally to the US , where he is applying for asylum and waiting for his case to be adjudicated. He was delivering packages for Amazon when ICE arrested him this week. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
You can imagine why the Trump administration might get a wee bit defensive about anyone offering a critical perspective on this part of our nation’s history. Especially since they hope to repeat it. The latest edition of Receipts from @crampell.bsky.social:
The United States banned naturalization by ethnically Asian people in 1870. Then it banned entry by ethnically Chinese people in 1882, Japanese in 1908/1924, and almost all other Asians in 1917. Courts clarified these were racial, not geographic bans. Extremist memes will not erase history.

Homan just admitted ICE has been endangering the public, its targets, and its own officers by making record vehicle stops without even an enforcement upside! He admits that they could be arresting people outside of their cars but haven't been, yet ICE plans to restart them again!

ICE shooting victim in Maine was a 26-year-old man from Colombia with work authorization and a Social Security Number, likely an asylum applicant. It'll be interesting to see how he came to be on ICE's radar.
David J. BierA theme in ICE shootings is putting their bodies in front of vehicles. This practice is dangerous for the officers and manufactures a reason for them to shoot drivers if they make one wrong move. One witness says the victim said, "I tried to stop" before dying. www.pressherald.com/2026/07/13/b...

“I think his strategy now is the same as it's really been from the very beginning, which is to try and figure out how to subjugate Ukraine. ...And he's using really most of the means at his disposal to try and achieve that,” says Professor @bdtaylor-su.bsky.social. @supolisci.bsky.social
A study finds restrictions imposed in the 1920s, which Stephen Miller has praised, harmed innovation and reduced Americans’ economic well-being. Immigrants increase innovation by locating in hubs like Silicon Valley, NY and Boston. @mclem.org @douglasrivlin.bsky.social www.forbes.com/sites/stuart...
