The Nexus Project's President, Jonathan Jacoby, penned this example letter to Mayor Mamdani to demonstrate what a better path forward could look like.

While many Jewish communal leaders have chosen a path of confrontation rather than engagement with Mayor Mamdani, the events of last week make clear there are better ways to begin a working relationship with the mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population in the world.

This is not Abulhawa's first foray into blatantly antisemitic rhetoric, as we've written about here. It’s incumbent on all of us to call out antisemitic extremism when we see it.

In a different post, Abulhawa continued with a variation of the "109 Countries" myth, which posits that so many countries expelling Jews reflected poorly on the Jews rather than the antisemitic policies and actions of those countries.

Abulhawa’s tweet uses a very specific framing of the myth that was popularized by Nazi theorist Alfred Rosenberg in his book Der Staatsfeindliche Zionismus. So it’s not *just* an antisemitic myth. It’s a reading of the myth that’s specifically suited to Nazi ideology.

For those unfamiliar, the "Stab-in-the-Back” myth falsely claims that the German army did not lose World War I on the battlefield, but was betrayed from within by Jews, socialists, and communists, among others. This myth was central in the Nazi Party’s propaganda machine.

Our community’s leaders have a responsibility to press for policies that protect Jews. And they have every right to debate, criticize, or oppose Mayor Mamdani’s positions on Prime Minister Netanyahu. But our community suffers when they confuse the two. 3/3

In the 9 years since Charlottesville, the antisemitism & white supremacy on display that weekend have moved from the fringes to the mainstream — normalized by political leaders & media voices. The NY Young Republicans’ Nazi problem is just a sad manifestation of that. Every leader must reject it.

Real commitment to Jewish safety means confronting antisemitism wherever it shows up, including within your own organizations. Anything less is just rhetoric.
