I write mostly about the intersection of tech & art/culture which these days means I spend nearly all my time trying to address the exploitation underlying current AI models. A secular humanist interrogating modern religions.

“The central challenge in this project was how to introduce this novel technology to the parenting market while transcending the negative connotations of ‘surveillance.’” —A branding consultancy used by Nanit as noted on its website Truly terrifying! @hypervisible.blacksky.app @knibbs.bsky.social

“Things that seem like absolute bedrocks, or even axioms of political thought, can cease to exist.” Like the rule of law in America. Peaceful transfer of power. An independent judiciary. Seemingly stable institutions depend on good faith. Without it, they crumble. There’s a lesson hidden here, no?

Kate from Kharkiv

So it's really striking that all that's solid really can melt into air. The things that seem like absolute bedrocks, or even axioms of political thought, can cease to exist. Breakup of Soviet Union also means that 1990s in Russia happened faster there than here. Time goes faster there than in US.

Individual sovereignty is extremely attractive to those with power. It is less liberating for most of us. Great thread from @jennycohn.bsky.social. These folks are selling a form of freedom that works only for wolves.

Jenny Cohn

Peter Thiel has promoted the Sovereign Individual, which says that the shift from “mass democracy” to “individual sovereignty” can happen “invisibly” (and without a shift in public opinion) via tax-free zones & free ports & that the power of nation states will eventually splinter into fragments. 1/

“If the D.A. truly believes that exposing bigotry is a personal agenda rather than the duty of every sworn peace officer, we have a profound crisis of leadership. It’s not just terrifying, it is a clear and calculated message.”

Wow, the narrative arc of tech VC, to DOGE, to Polymarket is pretty terrifying. That’s an arc that doesn’t bend towards justice, that’s for sure!

NEW: there are at least *two* DOGE alums in high places in prediction markets. In addition to Elie Mishory at Novig, ex-DOGEr Jonathan Mendelson is a Polymarket exec: www.wired.com/story/doge-v...

Everyone please stop what you are doing and read this insightful and comprehensive thread. You won’t be sorry.

Last week I presented a keynote at #SIGIR2026 titled "Emancipatory Information Retrieval: Towards Critical IR Theories and Practices". Slides: bhaskar-mitra.github.io/files/emanci... I went in nervously excited but several people appreciated talking openly about this topic. A quick thread. 🧵 1/

This. 👇🏽 Absolutely this. And 🙏🏼 to @timnitgebru.blacksky.app for her advocacy on this. The current AI ecosystem is rooted in exploitation and reifies bias. Those are the things demanding our attention.

Bhaskar Mitra | ভাস্কর মিত্র

AI is built using uncompensated appropriation of works by writer, artists, and coders and underpaid crowd work. Who gets to labor for AI and who gets to benefit from it (note: I didn't say "use") mirrors racial capitalism and coloniality. Relevant read: "Ghost Work" by @marylgray.bsky.social 16/

This particular elephant in the room actually defines the room. Huge thanks to Bhaskar for naming it. You can’t talk about AI without addressing its effects and not merely its capabilities. Who it harms, and who it benefits. Beyond its claims of democratization, whether it empowers or enfeebles.

Bhaskar Mitra | ভাস্কর মিত্র

This is not happening in a void. It is challenging but we must acknowledge the 🐘 in the room: Big Tech / Silicon Valley's growing alignment with authoritarian actors across the globe and their complicity in building digital infrastructure used for large scale human rights abuses and oppression. 11/

Don’t look away. Look up (or something like that). Resist as if your life depended on it. Sadly, that doesn’t require any imagination. And whatever you do, read @sarahkendzior.bsky.social
