just to say that in my research on unemployment in the 70s and 80s, I had the surreal moment of seeing government officials blaming unemployment for school leavers in *1978* on the particular fecklessness of modern youth. absolutely zero sense of wider structural changes to the economy at all.

I do sometimes worry that all the worried headscratching about youth unemployment might be missing the point. Everyone is always talking about how it relates to the education or welfare systems, no one wants to say "well the economy just produces far fewer entry level jobs than it once did"
