It's July 25, the anniversary of the fall of fascism in Italy, so, in town squares everywhere, people are gathering to eat "anti-fascist pasta", a tradition started by a family who fed their village to celebrate on the day. It's a lovely communal affair with partisan songs. The food was delicious!

But even if it’s 0% my place to suggest or mandate those changes, I can support the hell out of people working community-internally to make them, and they are many and incredible. (You might enjoy this article, it’s a heart-burster:)

I guess I land on “it’s up to people within a community to decide how/if they’d like to change their language”, and language that encodes troubling or oppressive structures (including ones that may be changing now) isn’t a disqualifier for having language rights, or a good reason to “let ‘em die” /

Thanks for bringing more really important nuance to this - FWIW I agree, and don’t want to collapse oppression into “stuff outsiders may find uncomfortable or disagree with”. Using “they’re oppressive” as carte blanche to oppress people or invalidate their rights is also pretty dangerous. /

dude annoyed me so much I forgot to note a recent study showing language & culture investments produce a net economic BENEFIT in British Columbia so even if you want to be a bloodless quant about it, funding language revitalization is good for GDP fpcc.ca/stories/fpcc...
