That's the value AI adds.

I figure any search that uses some algorithm qualifies as AI under broad definitions (especially if the results are sorted by "relevance" or something). It's not what anyone means when they say it these days (and most journals clarify this in definitions), but what the hell.

Because I'm a weirdo with multiple submissions, each cycle is a mini experiment in comparative approaches. My fastest last spring was around six days, and last summer the responses were, on balance, generally within one to two weeks. I think it has been, and will continue to be, mostly a crapshoot!

I've had some offers in hours, others in weeks, others in more than a month, and a couple in more than six months. Journals that have just actively opened are likely to get started soon. Those that are perpetually open are unknowns.

My longest wait last spring was eight weeks (I think @jerryedwards.bsky.social told West Virginia to slow-walk the offer). My longest waits ever were more than six months (prior season's submission accepted; this happened to me twice, once while a student and once in practice).

I may or may not have encouraged this way of thinking in one of my responses to NYU's disclosure requests.

I mean, that's just a description of my research agenda.

Are you telling me that you don't have a dozen parallel submission streams for the same article, with some that are double-spaced, some that are single-spaced, others with 11-pt. font, and others with a tailored cover letter that includes your horoscope along with the word count?

(I sent them a message using the "Conversation" function after the fact. Their policy doesn't define "AI," so I had to cop to using terms-and-connectors searches and the occasional, accidental acceptance of a Microsoft Word spellcheck suggestion).

NYU's announcement that they were open to submissions included a note that they'd updated submission requirements. The announcement itself referred to the web page. If you click on the little "Guidelines" link on the submission page, you'll usually find updates there too. I'm sure I've missed a lot.

I guess I've seen so much talk about Next Things proposed and promised over the decades that this doesn't really mean anything to me. And a broken system has uneven impacts on those involved. Those at certain institutions and of certain seniority will probably still be ok, if inconvenienced a bit.
