No joke. I have had a scab on the tip of my nose for months that I have compulsively picked at and cannot let heal. This is the kind of advice my OCD takes to keep me alive.

Nevermind the fact that it's consistently over a hundred degrees right now, having a toilet that feels like it's breathing on your ass is fucking weird.

IMO, the heart of Appalachian cuisine is in its poor immigrant roots. So much of what you grow up on out there is influenced by simply what is available. So much foraging and hunting. Canned and preserved goods for harsh winters. Ungodly amounts of salt. It's not something meant to be *elevated.*

And that's how we got here, y'know? Between the ones who call them baskets of deplorables and those who invest in utterly useless projects, who do you think they'll gravitate toward? At least the useless project pays them lip service.

Every time I go back, I'm so conflicted about whether I miss it or not. And I know I don't actually. But I do care. I care SO MUCH. Because I know the potential. I just wish others did, too. Instead, it gets written off as a place for backwards hicks who don't deserve care or concern.

Look. I hate a LOT of the people there. I hate how that place sucks the soul out of you through isolation and conservative propaganda. It's not a GOOD state. But it is beautiful. And the good people there are the best people you'll ever meet because they know how hard survival is.

And of all the things, WVU? When only 55% of high school graduates even attend college? This MAYBE would have fared better at Pierpont or Potomac State. But even then, the students there are on track for Associate's and other technical degrees they can get in 2 years.

The state is almost always ranked as one of the most impoverished states in the country. These people don't want extracurricular classes in colleges they'll never attend. They want access to healthcare and the financial ability to repair their homes.

But this is exactly where the opportunity lies. Pointing to this wildly obscene allocation of funds that could have gone into things that actually matter to the populace there. Fuck, man, you could win votes just by comparing the cost of filling potholes to what they spent on this project.

Even with the state's PROMISE scholarship, they can't afford it. And that's if they meet the academic qualifications in the 44th most uneducated state of the country. (College ranks fucking 46th.) The demographic of West Virginians that would want classes like these is just so unbelievably slim.

I don't know how anyone can think that this is anything more than ego and a bunch of vultures waiting for him to croak so they can seize back power. Nothing he's doing is going to impact the right's work. They're just letting him use the globe as his sandbox until he goes down for forever naptime.
