Get hit with a foreign country’s space junk, or get your moon base accidentally smashed by a foreign country’s space junk… that’s not God or anyone else. That’s bureaucratic laziness and a chance of war. I’m talking about remote possibilities. But hitting the moon with this junk was remote, too.

And we’re going to keep right on doing nothing, until one day we launch something capable of accidentally starting a war, because “meh, the risk is pretty low, we don’t need to worry about taking any due diligence. That’s the biggest problem. Get hit with an asteroid, that’s on God… or whomever.

HAVING ENOUGH CONTROL to avoid this risk and not utilizing that, it is reckless. GRAIL’s incoming trajectory was fairly well established, as were so many other lunar impacts. Mistakes happen. But in this case, the mistake was allowing SpaceX to plan on doing NOTHING.

Nobody who ever addresses my criticism of this ever brings up any of this. Everyone just says the same thing: “nothing bad could happen.” It was not controlled. So it is impossible to say that nothing bad could happen. The way I see it, not having enough control to avoid risk, is irresponsible.

The two lunar landers lost on that upper stage could have been impacted by this. Steering the upper stage away from the moon, or even as a controlled impact away from current landing sites, would have been preferable. But no. It was left to drift. It hit a random place on the moon.

But once I realized that it was not being sent directly to a controlled orbit, that it was literally just thrown out there somewhere, my mind changed. That thing was a bad idea. Just like this is. Every other probe before it at least served a purpose.

SpaceX junk washes up all over the place. Proper decision-making (NASA, FAA, etc.) was involved. This: “who cares where it ends up, if it ain’t here… let SpaceX decide.” Elon’s Tesla Roadster was at least sent on a path that could be tracked, for the most part. I thought it was pretty cool… first.

And nothing is launched in China without government control. So you can blame the Chinese government for that one. “No big deal” but at least someone of authority had a say in it. Private companies should not be considered authorities about how to handle 4-ton space junk of their own creation.

The decision to allow it to drift uncontrollably was made by SpaceX, a then-private company. Not NASA, not the FAA, not the Air Force… SpaceX. It hit the moon without guidance. Only China has managed to do that. Once. They have a wonderful safety record.

So a 4-ton, out-of-control upper stage, which happens to be capable (in most cases) of being directed away from the moon (or, better yet, return to earth for an incendiary re-entry), is okay? It could have been sent to a heliocentric orbit. But they left it to fate. It isn’t about the moon.

Not sure about Texas, but: Q: Why are data centers good for our community? A: They force us to upgrade our utilities, and the revenue generated helps pay for those upgrades. Q: Why would they want to build here when the utilities are insufficient? A: We gave them breaks on utilities.

So it’s not commonly used as “antifreeze” per se but it is commonly used as a food-grade laxative. My lawyer made me write this.
