Fair play. This past week I’ve been pondering why knobheads playing music on the tube always play the same kind of crap rap music. Do they have a forum where they plan it together? But tonight’s pillocks seems to be playing Michael Boulton mixed with jazz. And I take it all back. This is worse.

Mostly agree. (Although I also think it doesn’t have to be humiliating to be tested on something you’re getting better at but we will never be the best at). The question for ed policy is really just at what age do we decide the marginal benefit of improvement from making you do it stops.

If you’re on about one GCSE option I don’t think most people are going to be that bothered as long as it’s not something that schools put loads of people in for to game results. But I don’t think that’s what this is.

LOADS closed. I’ve been doing some analysis of free schools recently and hadn’t realised quite how many!

Although I don’t think anyone, literally anyone, is against the idea of all kids getting such experiences. What they don’t like is some kids having it to be so much of their week.

I fear for what I call The Inevitable Doom Loop of Vocational Education: - it starts off hard to get parity of esteem - loads of kids fail - it’s made easier - it’s seen as a doss and schools lump kids in to game outcomes - numbers drop - it gets cancelled

The question for any serious new reform is how you will avoid this doom loop. Burnham’s answer is, I think, ‘local employers’. To which my checkmate is the employer-led local-consortium diplomas of 2008. Next move please, grand master.

If you compound the two it’s more rational not to take that route because the wages offered to you in the voc routes most open to women are not great

Well at least the focus on vocational education will distract the talk radio shows from talking about immigrants for a few weeks. Let’s call that a win.

Now, you sometimes get straddlers. Law is a great example. Although even then you have generally have a split between academic lawyers and practising ones - it’s just that practising lawyers sort of do both. But that’s also why they do a degree and then technical training!

And I think this aversion to talking about routine picks at the snobbery around what I’m happy to call a voc-tech-smush. I think there’s a range of jobs that are technical *because* they are routine and learning to do that thing in lots of scenarios is a key difference…

But a technical programme in ‘business’ is not really a technical programme. This matters because of my point about learning to do very specific things. Painting pottery may be intricate and complex, it is also routine.
