Ewing & Heezen announced their findings in 1956. In 1957 Tharp & Heezen published their N Atlantic physiographic map.⁠ #sciart #printmaking #womenInSTEM #histsci #linocut

East Africa. Heezen was convinced. They had discovered a worldwide mid-ocean ridge system, 10,000s of km long. Tharp was able to mine existing data to show the Mid-Atlantic Ridge extended to S Atlantic & found similar features in other oceans which lined up with epicentres.

when one map was placed above the other on a light table the earthquakes formed near continous lines along the Mid-Atlantic ridge right where Tharp had indicated a rift valley. Using earthquake data to extrapolate & plot the rift position they found that rift extended landward into the Rift Valley

physiographic maps, which really gave a sense of the geology, & were not US Navy classified, so they could publish. A 2nd project involved plotting earthquakes, & Heezen insisted they work at same scale. Heezen noticed that ocean earthquake epicentre data also formed long lines - in fact

The early ideas about plate tectonics were still quite controversial & unpopular. Heezen dismissed this as “girl talk” - though really a vital piece of the plate tectonics puzzle.⁠ ⁠ Tharp believed rift was real though she hadn’t convinced Heezen. In 1952, they began working on

She spent months plotting profiles of N Atlantic. The ship tracks were sparse but when Tharp compared several ~ parallel transects she noticed a V-shaped notch in the centre of all profiles. She suspected they coincided because they indicated a rift valley along the ridge crest.

Maurice ‘Doc’ Ewing at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia hired her to draft 1000s of echo sounder profiles. Women were still not allowed to participate in research cruises. Before long, Heezen came to LDEO & required so much drafting work that Tharp worked exclusively with him.⁠ ⁠

The good news is there are signs of an uptick in numbers globally but the need for habitat preservation is urgent. 🧪🐡🐅

That would be extra absurd amongst geophysicists (and theorists to boot) 😂

Sometimes Earth science meetings include field trips and I found myself in a van with colleagues on steep and winding roads in New Zealand. Famous senior American scientist asks, “How do you farm in this steep terrain? Do you have special livestock?” Kiwi guide deadpans, “We call them sheep”
