Do you mean this specific closure technique, with the sashes? The actual opening down the back (or, earlier, in the front) is necessary for anyone to get in and out of the dress.

This is actually muslin in the sense of lightweight cotton fabric, not a prototype! And the slit is really just in the back of the bodice - it doesn't go down into the skirt.

I did not, as I can't get insurance to pay for it yet. I really do think it's just my pillow or something. Probably.

They are, but that's not uncommon for the period. The nicest ones are cut to fit delicately around the wrist and hand, but it's not unusual for them to just be knuckle-length plain sleeves.

Tbh I think it's usually classicists that have nuanced opinions on the film. The people insisting that it's a Bad Inaccurate Movie are "history buffs" who are really up on Wikipedia.
