Oh, its the second bit. It's anime and video game studios behaving like keiretsus, because they are all part of keiretsus. So the primary interest is always to protect the company's image over fearlessly discussing the art, and that leads to boring, samey coverage.

yeah, @shineyezehuhh.bsky.social's recounting of zoom group interviews made me die a little inside. THAT'S how it's done now?!!!! AWFUL, awful, awful.

What you'd end up with was a canned, rote performance of an interview. All press would attend, recorders out, so then there'd be a rush to transcribe it all fastest. Snoooooore~

The one I hate the most and stopped agreeing to do years before I slowly wound down writing about anime regularly was the at-con group interview, where there'd be a press roundtable with the same requests for pre-screened questions and no-go topics.

wasnt always like this, but as Japanese studios got more involved with western press... yep, there's a playbook and they often try to stick to it. There's a similar problem with JP anime industry panels at US cons. Again, there's a playbook.

one of those "of course... why didn't I realize it?" moments for me for Shuki Levy was finding out that he didn't personally write most of the TV songs credited to him; he ran a composing/publishing workshop of hired guns that ghostwrote for him. Hans Zimmer does the same thing!

yup. the pit (the central hangout spot, also a popular busking area that made Mary Lou Lord a star) is gone, and all the cool shops have been replaced by bank branches and franchise coffeee stores :(
