Lots of very active fires in OR, WA, BC, ID and MT. GOES- West geocolor showing massive smoke plumes, and mid-ir (white and red areas). Precipitation forecast for the next 10 days and many of the fires will not see any rain. Expect more rapid growth in these fires in the coming days.

Active fires in BC and Washington State this afternoon. GOES-West mid-ir below showing active fires (white) & very active fires (red- pyrocb - yellow dash). Tomorrow looks scary as significant lightning expected across southern BC and parts of Washington State that have been hot and dry.

Another lightning outbreak now ongoing in PacNW (TS Elida's remants), & this time fuels are considerably drier west of Cascades following recent heat. Numerous additional wildfire ignitions are likely across much of OR/WA over next 48 hr, worsening existing outbreak. #ORwx #WAwx

Graphs showing cumulative area burned and carbon emissions in Ontario. Note in terms of area burned 2021 is the top spot but 2026 is top spot in terms of carbon emissions. Both are correct. The reason for this is that the 2026 fires are more severe - consumed more biomass (greater depth of burn).
