I'm still working through this hypothetical, but if it comes down to buying a piece of writing or not based on whether the author can explain what they intended, I may fall on the side of not buying that piece of fiction

i think people advising that authors are going to be ok because they can explain their creative choices better than a slopper are coming from a good place (and prob mostly right!). but boy do i hate the presumption that writers have to rationally talk through the minutiae of their creative choices.

It tickles me immensely when Reckoning publishes a really short poem. I'm like "that author got paid $1.75 per word", and that makes me happy. Worth every penny

And today's poem at @reckoningmag.bsky.social, by Fatima E. -- "A rubāʿī for the rescued pangolin of Ravi flood." I love this one so. "a stranger’s hands became a shore: gathered him whole." reckoning.press/a-ruba%CA%BF...

I'll be there. With trepidation. Never been on Worldcon programming before! Among other things I have a short fiction chapbook coming out from @fabulistmag.bsky.social and I get to do a preorder launch event with @nmamatas.bsky.social and @brucemcallister.bsky.social

Los Angeles Worldcon

The moment we have all been waiting for is finally here: the full program for #LAconV is now live!

There are a lot of brilliant turns of phrase here, but how about "The roses now are molting into thistles" and "What / wilderness can witness peace?"

Reckoning

The very last poem from IT WAS PARADISE, our special issue on environmental justice in war and conflict edited by @soniasulaiman.bsky.social, is "Nature Knows A Little About Blooming" by Prosper C. Ìféányí. We always like to end on a high note: reckoning.press/nature-knows...

A plea to everyone who writes cover letters to editors: be yourself. Formal language begins to feel like the province of the soulless more than ever before, and also, I just want to know you and trust in your word, and formality shields me from that. This has been a fuck ai subtweet, thank you

They are just so fucking beautiful. Flesh of the gods and no mistake

Countdown to me biking to Canada is now basically "until I get home from Boston"!?

Just made a minor change to our website regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge pathway. You can use a Michigan Enhanced ID at customs. We had the Enhanced Drivers License listed already. This is another option for those that do not drive. detroitgreenways.org/crossing-the...

It's weird, topical, neurospicy, it's got moomins, it's by a new author, it makes connections you've never thought about, it's not like anything you've read. I'm proud to feature this quintessentially Reckoning essay in our 10th anniversary issue. Been wondering about what we publish? Start here

Reckoning

From Reckoning X, an essay on how to survive and remain creative while the world is plunged into chaos: "The Main Thing Is to Not Be Afraid: Tove Jansson, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Art in the Era of Climate Change" by Moshe Schaffzin reckoning.press/the-main-thi...

Me and my kid once made up a Godzilla sized necromantically animated statue of The Colonel which wreaked havoc across Kentucky and could only be defeated by the Flying Spaghetti Monster. So I guess I'd go with that

Your periodic reminder that my cut from running @weightlessbooks.bsky.social goes to fund @reckoningmag.bsky.social, so when you subscribe to an indie magazine at Weightless, you're actually supporting TWO indie magazines

So delighted to get to publish some compelling detective fiction at Reckoning! CHINATOWN is a great movie I often quote as an example of environmental justice storytelling, but I think we've published only one other mystery, "The Blackthorn Door" by @fordwalker.bsky.social

Catherine Rockwood

New from @reckoningmag.bsky.social today, "Herkimer Inquiries" by @rathmercury.com: a canny, queer tussle with the supernatural and with City Hall, in Albuquerque. reckoning.press/herkimer-inq...

This relentlessly kind, human story leads me to wonder if all stories featuring artificial intelligences that don't completely suck should henceforth be regarded as fantasy instead of science fiction

Reckoning

From IT WAS PARADISE, our special issue on environmental justice in war and conflict edited by @soniasulaiman.bsky.social, "Life According to Tabeeb", a story about a decidedly humanist medical AI assigned to a hospital in Cairo, by @yoakeim.bsky.social: reckoning.press/life-accordi...
