Oh yeah I still can't play Virtua Fighter 5 on Steam anymore because the update made it so I need secure boot, a thing that is a pain in the ass to get working right on my OS (Void Linux). So you know, that's cool.

We've discussed whether we should talk about it on the HG101 Podcast. It and MARZ are the only two Virtual-On games we haven't covered yet, and folks are not enthused about MARZ.

They gave him Steve Urkel's voice early on and from that day forward he was invincible. Even when Urkelmania faded away, Sonic didn't. The spirit of TGIF bestowed unspeakable powers.

The Sega racing game legacy is great because they tend to be good on average and they all do something different enough from one another that everyone has their own personal favorite.

It's messed up how Sega just stumbles into Sonic continuing to find success despite having the most braindead executive leadership ever. Like it just stays popular and successful in spite of them, not because of them.

I would normally say you could go grab the original Crazy Taxi off of Steam and there are mods that'll fix the control issues and the soundtrack and it is a pretty great experience overall, but you know, Sega pull that off of Steam for ??? Anyway you can go grab Crazy Taxi 1 By Any Means Necessary

I guess Kunoichi/Nightshade isn't deliberately called "Shinobi" despite being in the same franchise.

I said this when I played the Windows 9x version of Virtual-On and Outrun 2006 on Xbox, but it bears repeating; Sega, you have decades of Arcade games that you're just sitting on. Give them rereleases (outside of Yakuza!) so more people can play them!

Shinobi is a strange franchise for Sega because its like, those games could all be given different names. They don't really iterate off each other that often. They only really share a theme. And for some reason it kind of works? The most outlier of the Sega IPs.

They are not a Nintendo or a Capcom where they seem like they can give franchises the sort of resources to keep them relevant. They're at their best just winging it and end up with a fluke creative masterpiece (that they then proceed to strangle to death to make five more bucks)

Like I said, I enjoyed Sega's output the most when they just let their developers try out whatever. Maybe they were tinkering with some new technology or programming trick or whatever, and ended up with something legendary or quirky. And maybe they only made one of those, maybe two if they could.

So what do I, as a Sega fan, actually want? Well, aside from just making their classic games catalog more readily available, they should just have their development teams throw shit at the wall until they land on something cool, rather than squeeze blood out of IPs they don't care about.

Also key to remember, a lot of the old guard at Sega is gone. A lot of the people that mad the Virtual-Ons and the Crazy Taxis have been gone for decades. It's no wonder the new game felt like a reskinned Yakuza minigame

Look they're bringing back Crazy Taxi! No, not that one, that's old shit, here's the new one, it will be better because it is new! Remember Crazy Taxi? We brought back The Offspring! Stop asking us about the old games. How about some Crazy Taxi merchandise instead? You should buy that.

Anyway, all this to say, whenever Sega says they're bringing That One Franchise You Like back, you should always expect the worst, because they don't actually give a shit about those IPs. Otherwise, they wouldn't be making the original games impossible to acquire in any legal way.

The stories about Nagoshi's involvement with that game sure did a number on my opinion of him, among all the many other things. As well as the house of cards that is RGG in general.

I think they're simple enough of a concept that most casual gamers just kinda let it slide. I feel about the same regarding Katamari Damacy games after We Love Katamari.

They sure didn't care about it during the Saturn era, because Virtua Fighter and Sakura Taisen existed.

Coincidentally, this was also Columns. And it did okay for them, up until they bought Puyo Puyo, which is what they really wanted after a while.
