Design systems should store decisions, not their outputs. "Text is the most muted readable color against the surface" is the actual design decision; #2e1d3f is just one evaluation of it. Most systems ship thousands of frozen evaluations and lose the reasoning, which is exactly why they rot.

new toy: RayColor 🎾 generative palettes from a raytraced scene: one sphere, a five-sided room, three lights, mirror walls. drag the lights, harvest the colors. palettes stay coherent because every swatch is the same light in the same room. meodai.github.io/ray-color/ let me know what you think.

this started with my hue lights: every time I changed the room color, the tennis ball on the table turned into a completely new palette. same ball, new colors. so I built the room, a tiny raytracer where you don't pick colors, you place lights and sample them off a sphere 🎾💡

generative color palette idea: instead of editing colors, you edit the conditions they exist in. sample points from a raytraced scene. Move a light and the whole palette shifts together. coherence for free.

my color-names list has 30k+ names but they cluster where humans look: reds, colors found in nature, pastels. so I made the opposite: colornames-oklab: 4444 names blue-noise sampled over OKLab, covering all of Rec2020. every region gets a name: meodai.github.io/colornames-o...

color-name-list@14.46.0 At ~30,000 color names, maintaining the list is less about making it bigger and more about making it better. This release focuses on removing duplicates, improving consistency, retiring weaker entries, and adding stronger new ones. Suggestions and PRs are always welcome.
