I’m a professor raising two in daycare and public schools. You just get really efficient and good at setting boundaries and prioritizing at work. (I also do a lot after bedtime - that’s life)

Enjoyed hobbit in 2nd or 3rd grade. Could never make it all the way through LoTR though - I was bored by all the battle scenes (sorry!) People really underestimate kids.

I was flying out yesterday and there was a long ground stop at DC area airports because of their stupid airshow. Which then got extended due to storms. Loved sitting on the tarmac for 4 hours 🙃

This is basically our rule, except that I charge them $1. (And it’s usually not even stuff that I put away! But I can still typically find it in under a minute)

Sophomore year of college, met with a bigshot bio professor to ask her to be my advisor. She told me, “if you’re serious about science, you can’t do study abroad” I stuck with my original advisor, did the study abroad, ended up with a PhD, and am an associate prof in global health.

The flip side is that I’ve taught with faculty whose policy was “everyone gets an A” b/c they wanted better evals. I increasingly have students who expect As even when they do poorly and turn in assignments weeks late. I don’t think this is the solution, but something needs to change.

So much this. Enforcing consequences for my 4 y/o generally means tears, and you absolutely get judged for letting your kid cry. I can deal with it at home or at the playground, but not so much on a plane.

Depends on the field. Soft money position, means that we work 40-60 hours year round (but on the plus side we’re paid a 12 mo salary). I was in the private sector before I went back to school, and I work WAY harder in academia, with fewer supports, than I ever did in the private sector.

We live in an urban rowhouse/apartment neighborhood packed with families, and these are extremely popular among families with multiple children. A bucket bike holds 2-3 small children, and when the kids outgrow it they ride their own bike. E-bikes are perfect for urban neighborhoods.

Completely agree. The humanities deserve so much more respect than they get. The solo part would be really difficult for me. I deeply appreciate being part of a team and it makes my job so much easier.

Authors can check that refs are not fake. It’s doable but has not been the norm (wasn’t needed before AI) and seems inefficient for everyone to check. If i am a middle author, I’ll pull refs within my field that I’m not familiar with to check, but I won’t systematically pull each and every ref.

The writing is not unimportant, but is essentially packaging all that work into 5000 words and 3-5 tables and figures. Typically 1-2 people lay out the first draft, and everyone edits the various pieces that they worked on, plus the discussion. And that’s how you end up with 20 co-authors.

Conservatively, 6-12 people have played key roles in conceptualizing and designing the study. That’s essential with this many methodologies and settings. Many more have contributed in other ways - analyzing data or working intensively on one specific activity.

Here is an actual example of a current project. Data collection in 3 countries over 4 yrs, involving research teams from 4 countries. 5 data collection activities in each country. Upwards of 300k participants. Pieces of this will be published separately, but there will also be a main results paper.
