I will add I am notorious among students for hating 300. I had students troll me with pics of them watching it during initial Covid lockdowns. They use it to derail lectures. My dept is planning on hosting "historical" movie screenings with faculty & apparently me ranting at 300 was the top request.

People actually do care about the past. Far from being told I'm wasting my time, I universally get a positive reaction on telling people that I teach ancient and medieval history. Don't belittle the manifestations of that interest if you want people to keep caring about the past.

This sort of thing actually happened with surprising regularity in the early Middle Ages. I can think of at least 2-3 abbots off the top of my head whose monks tried to poison them - though not over antisemitism.

Okay so actually I really liked The Odyssey. Loved the choice of focus, felt very appropriate both to the Late Bronze Age Collapse setting & our own historical moment without being too on the nose. The women almost all got glow-ups to their character, & the effects were restrained but creepy as hell

A friend asked me to go see The Odyssey today, I agreed on the condition that he drive and the theater serve mixed drinks. Which is great, because I basically have to watch this movie for my job, but there's no way I'm watching another Nolan film sober.

I had a vague memory of there being an Attila tv miniseries, but Gerard Butler plays Attila? Sure that sounds cringy, but Alice Krige as Placidia and Tim Curry as Theodosius II? I'm absolutely going to watch that.
