You are wildly underestimating the effectiveness of racism and religious discrimination in a swing state. You’re also wildly underestimating the danger of a “socialist” tag in a swing state if the candidate embraces it.

I don’t think we should worry about Detroit voters swinging Republican. We do need to worry about Detroit voters deciding to sit this one out. That’s roughly what happened in 2016 to Hillary in Philly.

I think there are plenty of moderate Democrats who (a) don’t like socialist policies either, or (b) are afraid that progressive candidates cannot win swing states.

I suspect most people don’t have an easy way to view the amount of water they’re using on an hour-by-hour basis.

The problem with relying on young voters is that they’re…unreliable. 

I’m not sure which is better…the name Carter Kieboom (especially for a slugger) or that his dad played in the Honkbal Hoofdklasse.

They may have some reason for voting for these candidates beyond agreeing with them. If I’m being charitable, I’d say it’s to preserve what little collegiality is left, or to seem fair to swing voters. It could just be old-fashioned log-rolling, though. 🙁

I wonder if the big problem is that their vote doesn’t actually matter. These candidates would be confirmed if every Democrat voted against them. Voting against the candidates gets them some credibility with the base for fighting, but that probably doesn’t help much in the long run.

Because Democrats have no leverage and no control of the institutions that let the GOP ignore the laws. Democrats also value the norms and rules that Republicans are throwing away.

Unfortunately, union members have been voting further to the right than union leadership/endorsements.

2. If we look at post-World War II history, the best success in stopping the far right has come from a “popular front” of unified cross-party support. This has almost always been led by the center left or center right. The far left just can’t seem to pull that coalition together.

Given the consequences of a loss (Trump remaining unfettered for two more years), Dem moderates don’t want to risk it. I’d add two points: 1. Even if progressives win in swing states this election, how would they do in a cycle that doesn’t have such strong headwinds for the GOP?

We have yet to see a progressive win a statewide election in a swing state against a “normal” GOP opponent. (I’m adding that last part because, even if you counted Fetterman as a progressive at the time, he was still running against Dr. Oz.) Is it possible that things have changed? Yes. But…
