Have been staying near a beach called An tSrúibh, anglicised as Stroove Informed that this migration of the “t” to the other side of the “S” is called metathesis Similar to medieval English “brid” becoming “bird”

Devastating dialogue from Anthony Powell

The government is to cowardly to deliver what the people want: a country where everyone looks like George Hook

Cian Ginty

From his cycling hatemongering, I always knew George Hook was a gobshite but ranting about standing at a bus stop and seeing people who "don't look like you" is maybe a low from him. I say maybe as it's been a while since he was presenting on any mainstream show and god knows what he's been saying.

Obviously I hate, detest, want to kill, etc, people who play music on the train as much as the next guy but – Why should it be illegal to play a tune on your phone but not to sing out loud, cackle hysterically, drum on the table with your fingers or talk in a loud annoying voice?

Jonn Elledge

I maintain that if Burnham made it legal to confiscate phones from people who watch video or listen to music without headphones, then called a snap election, he could actually increase his majority.

Paper books are gaining in value in a whole new way, centuries after their invention, and decades after their demise was predicted when ebooks came on the scene. The book is truly one of the greatest technological devices we’ve ever come up with.

Sara Nović

With the news that AI companies are buying up and then destroying old books to feed into their theft machines, this is a reminder to keep, and buy if you are able to, physical media. This is just the beginning of how they will try to control from every angle what you read, watch, listen to...

Personally I would have gone with “many-witted Odysseus”, thanks for asking

He says he types the words, so what does be mean by “write cursively”?

Tansy Gardam

obsessed with Ian Flemming's daily schedule - swim - brunch - write 1500 words no edits just freestyle - lobster hunting - pink gin - lunch - siesta - sit in garden - another swim - 500 more words - "a couple of powerful drinks" - dinner - scrabble with wife - sleep

Laundering your toxic personal brand through literature’s most famous repentant, gotta hand it to them they are funny guys

Kat Tenbarge

There’s an even more sinister angle to Johnny Depp’s ongoing “comeback” tour as the new Scrooge—it’s a Paramount production and part of a slate of Ellison-backed conservative cultural takeover attempts. It’s angled around MeToo rejection and the manosphere. spitfirenews.com/p/johnny-dep...

Whoever invented the it’s/its thing was a neurotic dope and we should never have listened to them

Correct. The reason why “a classic is a book that never stops saying what it has to say” (Calvino) is that it doesn’t have just one thing to say.

Nathan Goldwag

One of my Crank Theories of Everything is that the kind of work that survives and becomes part of the canon are stories that feature internal contradictions, because that means they have a rich text that can resonate with people in radically different circumstances and contexts.

It’s a composite work drawn from a tradition of various retellings. It’s a category error to try and make it internally non-self-contradictory or impose a coherent “this is the takeaway the author intended” on it. It contains multitudes. In these respects it will be v different to Nolan’s movie.

Stephen Nuñez

everyone seems to have absorbed a version of the story where everyone thinks Odysseus did something awful with the Trojan Horse and he was punished to roam as a result. That is not in the Odyssey. That is maybe derived from the Aeneid which was written many hundreds of years later by a Roman.

I was puzzled at lots of people who never mention books coming out with big Odyssey takes but then I remembered American universities do all that “one semester of cramming the Great Books so you can waffle for life” stuff

Everyone remembers the headbutt in response to his sister being insulted but forgets that he came out of retirement to play that World Cup because his brother came to him in a dream and told him to. Something so epic about making the actual World Cup into a personal family matter. That’s Zizou.

Zinedine Zidane has been hired as coach of France's national soccer team.
