Her Republican opponent is a freak show, our base is revved up and theirs is depressed. She's run a very good primary campaign and she's winning because she's authentic and has relatable life experience. Far from certain she'll get smoked even in a lily-White state like Wisconsin.

You can disagree with that bet or not but there's a logic there. And once you're down to that small a margin you're already in "The Republicans will beat you at the Supreme Court with hanging chads bullshit" territory at best. As it turned out, they were in a good deal worse shape.

Like the aim was to offset Harris' liabilities as a woman on national security and appeal to hawkish suburban women who historically voted Republican. They made a bet that they would gain more votes than they'd lose from disaffected lefties who they'd probably already lost anyway.

I see this argument a lot and I think if you're in the position of a really minor tactical move like this (appeal to marginal constituency x, hope it doesn't piss off marginal constituency y too much) being make-or-break, you're probably cooked anyway

I hated the Clintonian Third Way junk but it had a logic, especially post-Citizens United: The party would try to thread the needle between the donors, disaffected Whites who were migrating en masse to the GOP, and the party's base. And as the saying goes, you can't be all things to all people.
