Matthew Lewis -- living in the era of cults and consequences

I make things, including bike rides, state housing laws, bread, and trouble. Quality varies with rainfall, political winds, and tire pressure. Run comms at @cayimby for the love of cities.

I think the mostly-urbanized American left will understand the threat of mostly-suburban/rural Confederate Republican traitors after Confederate states have supplanted the Constitution to the degree that only war will be able to undo it. Republican traitors are quite serious about ending the USA.

Alexander Clarkson

Another datapoint for the fascist radicalisation of institutional pillars of much of the American Right

friendly reminder that the "fossil fuel industry" includes all western car manufacturers, all their suppliers, and all of the autoworker, pipefitter, laborer, and engineer unions on earth. "vanishingly small" delusional. there's really no hope of the left ever understanding this, is there

YIMBYs, a new moment of triumph is upon us! Atherton, the Silicon Valley enclave that prohibits all but single-family homes, one of the most exclusionary towns in the country, has just received its first multifamily housing project (ever!) under @scottwiener.bsky.social’s SB79!

I've been repeatedly assured by some of the most committed drivers in Los Angeles that Angelenos will pay literally anything to drive as long as the city government mandates that they drive literally everywhere in exchange for easy, subsidized parking. Welp. Ask, and ye shall receive.

L.A. gas prices are crazy again. Here are some gas stations that offer cost-saving deals https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2026-07-31/how-to-find-better-gasoline-price-in-los-angeles?utm_medium=social&utm_source=bluesky_

Another violent killer set loose on Berkeley's streets. It's simply incredible that we have to fight our city leaders to protect us from these violent thugs, while so many of our neighbors fight to *help them commit more violent crimes.* www.eastbaytimes.com/2026/07/29/b...

Dodge advertises the Charger as a weapon designed to kill people, and, shocker, that's how drivers use it. Seeing those commercials flipped a switch in my mind -- concern about gun violence isn't grounded in a moral framework; it's tribal signaling. We don't apply the framework to car culture.

Which vehicles most endanger the drivers of other cars? Giant pickup trucks — and the Dodge Charger Source: www.iihs.org/news/detail/...

About ten years ago there were a spate of arsons at new apartments in Oakland right around when left NIMBYs and DSA started making violent and aggressive threats online against YIMBYs. There's no way to deny the existence of a violent and dangerous faction on the far left that *will act violently.*

Alan Elrod

So Will asked a completely reasonable question about Mamdani’s grocery store policy and now he’s had his tires slashed. Really a banner day for the “dogpiling and abuse aren’t a thing” and “this is all just jokes” crowd

Parking. For cars. It's literally causing the end of civilization. Like, not in a metaphorical sense -- we are fighting over whether children should have homes, or drivers should be able to store their cars for free. So far, the drivers are winning.

Jonn Elledge

I feel like the way of dealing with such behaviour is to look these people right in the eye and say, very gently, "You think your right to park matters more than homes these children?" Then when they reply just repeat it with slightly different emphasis.

In addition to the phenomenon of individuals with antisocial personality disorder having access to cars -- which they absolutely should not have -- there is the phenomenon of individuals with no previous underlying mental health issues becoming violent sociopaths when it comes to their cars.

Cooper Lund

Sometimes I think it’s too reductive to say that a car is a uniquely deranging object to own, but then I see people who claim left politics compare the people trying to turn a carpark into a children’s home to Netanyahu and I think “no, the car has made you crazy”

According to the DSM, incidence of antisocial personality disorder -- aka "sociopathy" -- in the US population is around ~4%, or about 11 million people over age of 15. Not all drivers are violent sociopaths, but probably all violent sociopaths are drivers. We see more evidence of this every day.

Theo Gordon

Move over zucchini lady, this guy calling 'bike lanes white lanes' and calling the Terner Center the 'Gentrification Center' is my new favorite Berkeley Council moment. #berkmtg

The recent victory for a protected bike lane on Hopkins in Berkeley (congrats @walkbikeberk.bsky.social!!!) was opposed almost exclusively by older violent drivers. Unmentioned: Median age of victims of the worst driver violence on Hopkins was 67. Elderly drivers are killing elderly pedestrians.

Gravel Influencer

We've had a number of older pedestrians and cyclists killed by drivers recently in Massachusetts, and something I've noticed is how those deaths are treated even more dismissively than usual because of ageism and ableism. People of *all* ages and abilities deserve safe mobility.

Something I think about rather often is an old magazine from the 1990s called AdBusters. It was a bunch of renegade advertising execs and creatives who basically used the 'zine to both assuage their guilt over hawking trash to consumers, while warning those same consumers not to buy trash.
