Today in 1958 at Johnston Island in the North Pacific Ocean, the United States conducted Shot TEAK, using an Army Redstone rocket to loft a 3.8-Megaton W39 warhead about 48 miles above the Earth. A programming error caused the warhead to detonate directly overhead instead of six miles to the south.
