The case wasn't withdrawn. It was "settled." We're talking about the terms of the settlement, which a court has already rejected as being based on fraudulent motivations.

I actually don't think it is. It is so narrowly targeted and directly relevant to my work. And there was some background info that suggests it's not spam.

So I'm curious people think I should do. If I had received this message via email I would happily respond to it. But I'm slightly weirded out by the fact that they tracked down my relatively unknown personal cell number.

Of course, it's entirely possible that person or someone associated with them is reading this as well. But since I never try to give out that number, this all feels oddly violative. My email address is easy to find. It is not hard to contact me through other means.

But it does seem legit (the person does seem to exist and would have a reason to want to talk to me). I could (and perhaps should) respond asking how they got the number. But also part of me thinks I shouldn't acknowledge that they texted my actual phone number.

This morning I received a text from someone I don't know that actually does seem relevant to me (asking to talk to me about something I have expertise in). The text (oddly) says "I wanted to follow up via email" despite it being a text & there was no other contact.

... for things that refused to accept the VoIP number. A few months ago, the real number started receiving spam texts, all in 3 categories: tree trimming, offers of instant loans, and some polling firm. I immediately block and report all such messages as spam. Though they keep coming on new numbers.
