As an economics graduate I will be forever grateful for the genius of the Big Mac index in helping to explain purchasing power parity and exchange rate values in such a fun and innovative way. Happy 40th Birthday.

UEFA and CONMEBOL should threaten to create their own tournament and then FIFA is finished.

🔺 EXCLUSIVE: England and the other European members of Uefa will boycott Fifa’s tournaments if Gianni Infantino goes ahead with his plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors

Just finished this. An absolute must-read. A huge amount of work has gone into this book through an ambitious five-year project: The IFS Deaton Review of Inequalities. It is evident on every page, challenging conventional left and right thinking.

Very well argued piece here on how essential foundational knowledge in philosophy and mathematics is, alongside prior discipline-specific knowledge, in the age of AI. www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/ai-m...

AI makes foundational knowledge more important than everAmong the elements of the shared core grammar all students need, mathematics and philosophy deserve special mention, says Manu Kapurwww.timeshighereducation.com

We must have the stupidest property taxes in the developed world. So it’s disappointing Burnham has indicated they won’t be revisited. Yes there are major obstacles to reform but they are nothing that some targeted opt outs and deferments (stamp duty) and regional carve outs (London) can’t solve.

A lot of criticism on here of Burnham’s proposals for schools to adapt education to local business needs. I think some need to ask themselves whether the current system is really working? A system that provides general skills simply leads to a concentration of skills in a small number of places.

And good luck finding businesses to offer meaningful work experience to hundreds of thousands of 14 and 15 year olds. As ever a failure to acknowledge that our big challenge with vocational ed is our labour market.

Hardly surprising given the interviewer.

It's noticeable, too, that there wasn't a single question on the climate, at a time when Europe is experiencing catastrophic wild-fires & record-breaking heat. It's astonishing how low down the political agenda this remains in Britain, when all the environmental indicators are signalling disaster.

You’d have to temporarily exempt those who had recently purchased a house from the tax to avoid uproar.

Ian Dunt

Stamp duty/council tax decision presents a seemingly insurmountable announcement problem. You need time to get it right - at least until the Budget - but you cannot confirm you're doing it n the meantime because you'll freeze the housing market. So your only recourse is to dissemble and lie.

In a functioning democracy one would expect the decoupling of economic growth from economic sentiment to lead to wholesale political change to bring prosperity to a decisive number of voters.

Just watched The Insider interview with Elon Musk. Nothing to add that hasn’t already been said other than it was the most intense 90 minutes I’ve experienced for a very long time.

Enjoyed @samfr.bsky.social's substack on Burnham's cabinet choices and what it indicates for how he plans to govern. Best analysis I've seen so far; I think there is cause for some cautious optimism that Burnham could get to grips with the UK's long-term problems. samf.substack.com/p/a-theory-o...

Agree with this from @martinsandbu.ft.com & highly recommend his book, 'The Economics of Belonging', fleshing out the type of economic transition needed. However, it's possible Burnham's policies are merely symbolic at this stage to buy the political capital to 'go big'. www.ft.com/content/94a7...

The Labour cabinet is all over my Instagram. Not sure if it’s simply the algorithm picking up different types of content than before or if Burnham has instructed them to up their social media game.

‘Cost of living government’ likely to come into conflict with a fiscally prudent government and one committed to infrastructure investment. Something will have to give.

Hasn’t really sunk in yet that Starmer and Reeves are no longer in charge. It’s been a long two years of disappointment.

Pleeeease can Lucy Powell be interested in universities 🙏🏼

Fake account but the news is true and maybe Ed Miliband has been appointed Foreign Secretary because Burnham is going to be a domestically focused PM and so needs someone very strong and capable in the foreign office.

UK Prime Minister Updates

Ed Miliband has been appointed as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
