I'm sorry to be so difficult, but I'm afraid the truth is that I am.

Lionel Shriver, 'We Need to Talk About Kevin'.

alright let's do real discourse: five books *by bad people* that are still good or great books V.S. Naipaul, A BEND IN THE RIVER Allison Pearson, I DON'T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT Kevin Myers, WATCHING THE DOOR Yukio Mishima, CONFESSIONS OF A MASK Neil Gaiman, BRIEF LIVES.

God the answers to this are pretentious. Either Agatha Christy or Harry Potter, of course!

Sathnam Sanghera

If you met someone who had fallen out of love with reading, and you had one shot at getting them back into it, what book would you give them? For a thing.

It's not even a *nice* bubble. Just a place where people are getting progressively more enraged because they don't have enough heretics to persecute.

Rafferty

There are people on here that don't believe this place is a left leaning bubble? That's an amazing claim, obviously there is a small number of people on here with right of centre views, but there are far more communists. It should be obvious that's this place is a bubble

It was wishful thinking on the left, too. People were practically rubbing their thighs at the idea of Starmer being punished with a defeat to Reform. There was a strong moralising streak to the Reform mania, a kind of "see? This is what you get for <insert preferred transgression>!"

George Eaton

It’s long been clear that Reform is beatable – Farage’s terrible personal ratings, toxic brand, mass tactical voting against them. The narrative that victory for them is inevitable was based on superficial analysis + wishful thinking on the right.

PSA: the label is on the side/long edge.

Anon Opin

Duvets which aren't perfect squares should have some sort of marking along the top edge, as I'm sick of it being a 50/50 guess when I'm changing the sheets as to whether I've put it into the duvet cover correctly or sideways and then have to redo the whole bloody thing again.

I'm going to risk washing into the fraught discourse about Long Covid, because I have skin in the game. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia on 2012, but in retrospect it's obvious I'd been ill for decades (often the case.) I pushed back *hard* against the label, because I had, after much research,

It's the wrong way *and* exactly the thing that happened two weeks before the <checks notes> current Chancellor resigned, prompting the collapse of the first Labour government in 15 years.

Warren Oates

I am really disappointed that after Burnham has announced with great fanfare several spending committments, that we hear this weekend it was actually unfunded and indiidual departments are now being told they must cut back on their other spending to fund it all. This is the wrong way. 1/2

I was educated in a system like that, & apart from a few immigrant outliers like me, you could have predicted which kids would end up in what stream by the time we were 10, based on nothing but the ethno-socio-economic status of their parents. It's shit.

Sam Freedman

New post just out: "Burnham's first mistake" Splitting 14 year olds into academic and vocational paths seems intuitive. But it's a terrible idea that risks increasing inequality, and closing down options for the young people that need them most. (£/free trial) open.substack.com/pub/samf/p/b...

"Male and female he recreated them." "זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בָּרָא אֹתָם." Genesis 1 27, composed between circa 950 & 600 BCE.

Adults are an invention of Modernity, binary feminity of Enlightenment and humanism of Renaissance and Gothic. "adult human female" isnt really a coherent idea today, but it definitely couldnt exist back then. Learn some history. These remains pre-date every meaning by multiple thousand years.
