#OnThisDay during the #SiegeOfColchester - 31 July 1648, twenty Royalists with spades and a few with muskets went out at night pretending they were a working party. They passed one guard post but were fired upon by a second and had to retreat.

WO1 (RSM) Frank Hedges was a pre-war Regular in the RB. He was awarded the DCM for actions at Le Cateau in 1914 & the MC for actions at Ypres, in 1915. He tfrd to the Tank Corps & became RSM of 16th Bn. After the war he was RSM 2nd Bn. 100 years ago this month, in July 1926, he was awarded the MBE.

Company Serjeant Major Arthur Henry Godfrey, 419th (West Lancashire) Field Company, Royal Engineers, was killed in action on the opening day of the Third Battle of Ypres. The 34-year-old, from Ipswich, had previously been awarded the DCM. 📍 Wieltje Farm Cemetery 🇧🇪

PERSON OF THE DAY. 31 July 1956. England cricketer Jim Laker became 1st man to take all 10 wickets in a Test match innings, against Australia at Old Trafford in what became known as “Laker’s Match”. He took 19 wickets in the match in all, having taken 9 wickets for 37 runs in the 1st innings.
