I'm not sure if this is making sense. But I used to hang out with old men a lot (barmaid) and they just hung out with other old men. The only stuff they got exercised about was in the paper and hundreds of miles from them. Now they're online and seeing all sorts of nonsense.

This! I did the uni thing to quite the extreme. My qualifications got me jobs with liveable salaries. Now, I have the exact same qualifications plus 20yrs experience and I can't earn a living wage. I didn't change, wages did.
