This is a fantastic article. Unfortunately, crime and punishment, like so many other things in America, are driven by racism and fear.
Which is why we have accepted mass incarceration and the militarization of our police force. And sadly now federal occupation, and terror of many of our cities.
I absolutely loved that line. It also highlights the failure of the American people to hold their government accountable.
It started with Newt Gingrich and the idea that breaking the government to win was more important than doing the job of governing.
Easy now. As they will tell you, they are fiercely independent. Which is some sort of Teflon coating to not being held accountable for their poor decisions.

‘Huge windfall’ is an interesting choice of words. Like he received an unexpected inheritance from a long lost aunt.
Call it was it is, he is profiting directly from his position in office by a level of corruption never seen or tolerated in a democracy.
Most of us have a relative who has reached this stage at some point. And you just sit there and smile and nod.
You probably have taken away their keys… you consider them harmless and wear your patience hat as they tell you the same story over and over again.
But here in America…
So many people grew up in the era, where the Supreme Court was a force for good, that they ignore the overwhelming it’s overwhelming history where it was used as a tool of suppression.
And how strong the forces were to undo the accomplishments of the Warren court AND firewall ‘conservatism’.
I have no idea what Nancy Pelosi saw in him. The cynic in me wonders if in a strange way she was protecting her legacy by having such a weak successor.
Not that it needed protecting, is she is arguably the most effective SOH of all time.
The only thing worse than thinking you have a natural sense of humor when you don’t, is lacking the tact to know time and place to try to use humor.

The guy could literally come into their house, pull down his pants and take a dump on their living room floor, and they would take pictures of it and explain to their friends how it was the most magnificent thing any man has ever done for anyone.
Especially when he went from ‘kinda odd guy might be racist’ to ‘yeah, I’m a Nazi misogynist who intentionally caused mass starvation, am trying to interfere with politics around the globe’ after buying Twitter and America shrugged and got him more entangled/rich with/by our government.
Such odd leverage they have in this situation. Almost like they had intimate details of a secret the president has been desperately trying to keep hidden and everyone distracted from.
