A big problem I have with modern "criticism" is how people now think that average means bad. Anything less than an 8/10 or 9/10 means that it is on par with something actually awful. Everything has to be either "absolute cinema" or "the worst thing ever made" with no room in between.

The way Marvel Studios has handled Armor Wars, then Blade, and now Wonder Man is suspect at best. This is right before they turn Doctor Doom, whose racial oppression is the foundation of his entire character, into a white guy. Not looking great!

I keep going to see these superhero movies and I keep being so booooooooored.

The coolest thing about all the reactionaries mouthing off is she *did* watch the movie with attention and a critical eye. She's engaging with it on it's dubious merits. She didn't just write it off without a thought. Considerations were considered. Ponderables were pondered.

That is a literacy problem. You should work on that. Or don't I fuess if you're comfortable with your level of literacy.

I think Emily Wilson has earned the right to have whatever opinion she likes about adaptations of Homer. Her translations are amazing achievements and she's already survived several rounds of outrage about a female translator of such a manly poet.

You know what I've never seen a character in TV or film do? Buy a 10-lb bag of ice and whack it on the ground to break up the cubes. Kind of a blind spot for Hollywood

I wish it was more cool that so many people are talking about The Odyssey 🥲 I spent 7 years studying that book! In Ancient Greek!! For my degree!!! I have a lot of complex and interesting thoughts!!!! But everyone is so angry about it 😭

It is totally okay if you liked this movie but if you did, you still should read Emily Wilson's absolutely brutal takedown that is delivers some of the most devastating critiques of Hollywood's darling in deadpan prose and ends in a hilarious "but at least people are reading it now, so that's good"
