It's really the carelessly Tom-and-Daisy process of extracting the contents of a rare book, then obliterating it so the AI is the only way to access whatever value that content had, that has people upset. And that value might be permanently lost when the crash comes.

My most unpopular opinion is that not every book has historical and cultural significance and it is not, in fact, morally wrong to shred books. There are a shit ton of books out there that are "old" and "rare" and it's fine to shred them. They're in the Library of Congress probably.
