I mean, Britain is about to get it’s own far-right clown* as PM. They have the same problem as most of the High GDP Western “Democracies”: fascist populists vs ineffectual centrists who masquerade as “the left” without actually having a left. *by which I mean simultaneously foolish and terrifying.

The Americans were not winning this war either way. It’s a *good* thing that he didn’t double down before facing defeat.

Now if, in his rage for being conned into the war, he cuts off American support for Israel, I may be forced to concede another good word his way.

You can and should criticize Trump for many things, including *starting* the war with Iran. However, the U.S. agreeing to terms and ending the war before it really blew up is one of the very few good things he has done. Americans should capitulate more, the world would be a much better place.

The only difference is that Trump does it dumber and louder. He truly is the most American American President.

The U.S. is at once the world hegemon as well as a rogue state. This puts everyone in a very difficult position. I will say, the world is handling the Americans fairly well. That said, we could and should do a lot more to help Palestine, Cuba and Lebanon.

W, on the other hand, had his coked out sense of invincibility, and wrecked an entire country with that. He wasn’t as big of a dick, but he has killed more people. Also, at least Trump is causing Americans to finally have some goddamned shame. W also did that, but not as well.

I’m sorry but it’s still W. For all of Trumps faults, he is at least blessedly a horrible coward. The Iran War could easily be worse than Iraq, but thankfully Fred Trump beat an overwhelming fear of losing into his son, so he can’t bring himself go all in.

That’s actually the point: you’ll have much less power to demand anything. A mass of unemployed people dependent on UBI for basic survival have, and I hate to steal his language, no cards. It *will* be used to slash all other programs. That’s why it has billionaire fans.

Here’s the challenge: keep this energy even when the Yanks elect some milquetoast democrat who promises things will be different.

MAGA just lays it bare. The U.S. has been an evil empire since at least 1945.

But the basic goal should be to have a society where the poorest do not need a $1500 cheque every month, because a tolerable standard of living is a social guarantee. $1500 a month on its own would not make that happen.

What the demands should be is that the *basic* human rights (housing, education, healthcare, childcare, etc) should be provided. Some (healthcare, education) should not even have private competition. Others (housing) should be free at the basic level, paid for higher standards.

If the U.S. (or any other capitalist country) ever gets UBI, any talk of any other social program will boil down to “we already generously gave them their money, it’s their fault if they didn’t spend it wisely.”

And that donor base views UBI as a comparatively cheap way of smoothing over the worst contradictions of capitalism- especially an AI powered capitalism that will see huge swaths of the country permanently unemployed.

Democrats too. In the U.S., you basically have one party (the Capitalist party) divided into two factions- the unhinged psychopaths and the high functioning ones. Both will follow the whims of their donor base.
