As much as I love layering modes for convenience and choice effects, I think they can be a bit of a hinderance too. I find pointers very intuitive. I really miss them in languages where they are obfuscated... Python isn't too bad, some data structures.. "nonlocal".. but then there's Java naturally choosing the most confusing option.
