MD, Neurologist in Training @ University Hospital Essen, Germany. Clinician Scientist @ BingelLab and affiliate researcher @ King's College London IoPPN - interest in pain, expectation effects (placebo, nocebo), and Functional Neurological Disorders

A truly great collection of webinars about #placebo and #nocebo in many different contexts. The brightest minds - established experts and shooting stars - present their work. Recommend! From @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social @sipsplacebo.bsky.social @placebosydney.bsky.social @kingsioppn.bsky.social

We looked at a global cohort of >145,000 patients with a record of FND in the last 30 ys in TriNetX: confirmed frequent comorbidities and outcomes often worse than in MS. Read in JAMA Neurology: tinyurl.com/yc4wfyaj Open access to the accepted manuscript: osf.io/rwtnp @fndsociety.bsky.social

These two papers in Lancet Psychiatry about placebo/nocebo in practice and in trials are very worth reading. Be mindful about expectation in your patients/yourself, and critical even with RCTs. I hope reporting on placebo conditions, treatment expectations and blinding success improves steadily!!

Tim Nicholson

First of 2 great @thelancetpsych.bsky.social articles on placebo/nocebo in psychiatry (& relevance to all of medicine) led by the brilliant @mattburkemd.bsky.social This one on harnessing placebo & mitigating nocebo www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Interesting approach to avoid unblinding for a study on efficacy of psychotropic components. Just sedate them before giving the verum/placebo! I assume the setting & session with propofol alone might have large placebo effects, so sample size might be critical.

Lukas A. Basedow, PhD

A really smart and interesting study design to reduce expectancy effects. Looking forward to the main results! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Call for papers for a collection on placebo and nocebo effects in psychiatry - excellent! @sipsplacebo.bsky.social @timnicholson.bsky.social @devinterhune.bsky.social @labasedow.bsky.social @bnpa.bsky.social @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social

I’m guest editing a new BMC Psychiatry Collection on #placebo and #nocebo effects in psychiatry. We’re looking for work on expectancy mechanisms, communication, and implications for clinical practice + trials. Details: link.springer.com/collections/... @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social

Milestone for FND care in Germany: first guideline on functional motor disorder, published by German Neurol. Society. I contributed to comorbidities, pharmacotherapy & placebo/nocebo. Hope it's a valuable resource for clinicians & support people living with FND. register.awmf.org/de/leitlinie...

Finally a prospective study & spotlight on functional sensory symptoms! Congrats to the authors for this diligent, comprehensive & thoughtful work. Great to read qualitative analyses of symptom descriptions as well. Next up - pain in FND..! @braincomms.bsky.social

Rory Higgins

Delighted to report our study on sensory symptoms has been published in @braincomms.bsky.social - @jonstoneneuro.bsky.social, Prof. Mark Edwards, Dr. Jan Coebergh, @roryhigginsphysio.bsky.social, @gnielsenphysio.bsky.social academic.oup.com/braincomms/a...

Exciting research from Mirta Fiorio on placebo effects in the motor domain. She also experimentally probes predictions & bayesian integration in motor FND - can't wait to learn more from her on this in the future!

The Power of Expectations

If you missed it yesterday: Our newest #webinar is now watchable on our YouTube channel! 📽️ In this webinar, Mirta Fiorio from University of Verona gives an overview on her work surrounding placebo effects in the motor system 💪🏃 Watch it here: youtu.be/lGgEnqaYif4

@popkirov.bsky.social delivers yet another fantastic instructive clinical overview on FND at the @dgn-ev.bsky.social conference (second largest national neurologists' society in the world). Packed audience, most attendees of the whole event. Amazing

@8minutesold.bsky.social and others - cool project - and check our the page! Maybe a cool Sci Fi story from #cosmicchoreographies?!

Science & Fiction

This project now has a Ko-Fi page where you can donate to keep the project alive! 💙 This helps for example to pay for yearly domain costs and upkeep. There are also some limited stickers available to buy! 🌟 Have a look and support ➡️ ko-fi.com/scienceandfi...

SIPS snippet #4: It's so important to study patients directly to understand pain. So far, patient data seem to challenge the bayesian integration principles in pain. But we need a clearer picture - just as the work from Eleonora Camerone is striving to do! #SIPSplacebo2025 @sipsplacebo.bsky.social

SIPS snippet #3: Excited that we have people with lived experience at this conference @sipsplacebo.bsky.social The patient advisory board from Germany @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social has a poster today (Tues), no 88! Everyone at #SIPSplacebo2025 go check it out

SIPS snippet #2: Mirta Fiorio talking at #SIPSplacebo2025 about placebo mechanisms in motor system - important topic in neurology! And: Expectation & placebo/nocebo mechanisms are highly relevant in functional neurol. disorder - glad that @sipsplacebo.bsky.social is picking this up!

SIPS snippet #1: Ulrike Bingel from our @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social talking in the first plenary session of the SIPS conference in beautiful Krakow, presenting our work - no effect of dopamine pharmacomodulation on experimental placebo hypoalgesia. #SIPSplacebo2025

Great input from a great webinar! Many implications for funct. sens. and motor symptoms. Sensory processing relies on feedforward modeling of sensory consequences of own actions. Many things could go wrong here & produce prediction errors as basis for aberrant sensations or invol. movements.

Today is #FND awareness day! I was lucky to learn a lot from people with FND and leading scientists within the last six months here at @kingsioppn.bsky.social. If you don't know about FND - here's a great read!

FND Portal

Today is FND Awareness Day (UK)! FND is a common, painful, and disabling disorder. It remains under-studied and stigmatized, but we’re making progress. Here’s my in-depth personal essay on how we got here. medium.com/@fndportal/c...

Great brand new metaanalysis on experimental nocebo effects and what factors modulate them - By @madelinestein.bsky.social in the lab of @devinterhune.bsky.social. @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social @laurenatlas.bsky.social @winstontan.bsky.social @christianbuchel.bsky.social @bencolagiuri.bsky.social

Madeline V. Stein

Out today! We conducted a multi-level meta-analysis that included ~400 effect sizes, allowing us to make fine-grain distinctions between different nocebo induction methods. In particular, we were meticulous when defining different types and modes of suggestions. Hope you enjoy!! tinyurl.com/mwmeetuz
