On an (as yet) unsuccessful quest to find a human translation of Ivan Adamovič's article (K)Anály kyberpunku, I stumbled across an English language retrospective of his describing the emergence of SF in Soviet-influenced Prague. "In the Grey Zone of Science Fiction"

I've been curious about non-English/international reactions to the Cyberpunk movement as it was unfolding in the US, so will hopefully post some fun observations as I make them for a time. The first comes from this Czech language magazine ("Ikarie"), November 1991.

I got to meet this crew and play their game at Origins (and was also lucky enough to see a great panel with art director @irenekaoru.bsky.social along with her colleagues from R.Talsorian and Neuroscapes). This is worth checking out!

Fun Fact: If you put mid-80s James Patrick Kelly in a box, then he is both a Humanist and a Cyberpunk until you open the box and take a look.

Gardner Dozois only wrote bangers. I just re-read "Executive Clemency", co-written with Jack Haldeman II. The story is startlingly relevant to today, and I recommend checking it out. - Omni Nov 1981 Is available on Internet Archive - Geodesic Dreams is full of required reading, including this.

Novum Idea: DNA as data storage. Information density is such that a few grams could contain the knowledge of a civilization. Generational seed banks as a means to surreptitiously deliver massive informational payloads to the future.

I just became aware of @rachelcordasco.bsky.social's new zine "Small Planet" via @ancillaryreviewofbooks.org. She will be helping connect international works of SF to English language readers. The first issue has plenty of commentary on the meta of translating SF and I'm hyped for more!

@clarionwest.bsky.social 's Oracle game led me to this story which shook me up a bit. I recommend it. And that pen name doing some work.

Last week I was lucky to attend Origins where I listened to Winter Jaye discuss art direction for @rtalsoriangames.bsky.social Later I watched M.Pondsmith GM a CP Red game for actors from Edgerunners. Yesterday, this appeared on my porch, signed by both. My friends are thoughtful and sneaky!

I appreciated that @thebookloft.bsky.social participated with a booth at Origins this year. I picked up Jared Shurin's "The Big Book of Cyberpunk". His inclusions are KILLER with many translated and otherwise new-to-me works, along with well-informed selections that give me confidence in the rest.

More from Denvention Two, 1981. Cynthia Felice and Connie Willis don wearable technology to aid the fans. Their first co-authored novel would see publication in ~4 months after this photo. I've never read anything by Felice but got a chuckle out of their bit! (📷 Frank Olynyk via Fanac.org)
