Unfortunately true. I also think open world for the sake of open world has poisoned some dev timelines, forced them to make decisions they later suffered from in end result. It's one thing to have an open world. Another to have things to do in it.

Question as ever is how, where and when, not if. Also helps having a really clear idea of what you’re making. The latter being the greatest challenge of the two in my mind.

Wearing my dev hat for a moment. Mostly to what’s been said. The better you know your project, the better you can present it to players and targeted options for this stuff. Make it as open, visible as possible with the tools your game allows.
