Shit morning. The first manager to actually win something for Newcastle in my lifetime. He looked totally spent last season though, out of energy and ideas

You know what, Emily Wilson would love Spartacus: Blood and Sand (and the follow-ups) *This is not a joke, it's really good

London Review of Books

‘Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.’ @emilyrcwilson.bsky.social reviews Christopher Nolan’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺. www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

I repost this in the context that Jodrell Bank could be shut down for the sake of £2.8m per year. Is throwing tens of millions at publishers for APCs a priority use of limited research funds?

Caroline Ball

Overall data for the UK, by institutional spend. Eye-opening!

I'm fairly sure that FIFA relies on its not-for-profit status for a lot of its governance activities. This is going to be an almighty mess www.theguardian.com/football/202...

If he's serious about this, he'd focus as much on creating non-university routes into the service sector instead of drawing this vocational/academic line that is rooted in a view of the economy that is 50 years out of date

Chris Dillow

If this had been policy in the 70s (as it partly was), towns would have produced lots of mining engineers & metallurgists just before pits & steelworks closed. As the yanks say, you should skate to where the puck's going, not to where it is. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Inevitable. Jenrick was on BBC this morning playing all the hits: saved all their lives, nest egg, death tax. Anything to make it sound like pensioners are being robbed. I can't see a viable solution other than social insurance

David Oliver

Already, the Daily Mail front page is screaming about "Death Tax" for social care, just like it did last time Labour wanted to modernise funding and provision They are trying to kill the policy before it has even been announced Adult social care is not just about inheritance £

We're cutting an internationally important part of British scientific infrastructure for the sake of £2.8m a year. That's essentially loose change. We are not a serious country www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Two jobs! Two! Get on it

Daniel Devine

Unbelievably, there are *two* academic jobs at Cardiff University. One in British politics (seemingly broadly defined) cardiffuniweb.eploy.net/vacancies/53... One in political behaviour/opinion 🙌 cardiffuniweb.eploy.net/vacancies/52...

The UK continues its managed decline. Extraordinarily poor leadership from government to UKRI

James O'Malley

Terrible news. Aside from learning more about the universe, we're not going to get much economic growth by cutting science funding. (If only we had a Prime Minister who was interested in supporting the north, and Manchester in particular, who could stop this.) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

In a previous era, the social care issue would probably have demanded a public debate to resolve. It's full of trade-offs and misunderstanding and I think that in the modern media environment, those problems would be compounded by misinformation

Burning down entire universities, and the local economies that they support, because a handful of people have been criticised for their political views is utter madness. The proposal of a spoilt, privileged class that is used to having every single thing go their way

Peter Whitewood

Heffer showing his ignorance about universities again. For many towns and cities, ‘let them fail’ means one of the biggest local employers disappearing.

Saka on the right and Vini Jr on the left? I'd hand the title to them now. Though seeing how Arsenal are doing business this summer, they'll probably start the bidding at £50m

I think the biggest problem with Rings of Power is that the writers are obsessed with answering questions no one asked because they aren't interesting. A key plot reveal last series was how Mount Doom was formed. Now it's "what would a Balrog say if it could talk?

Wow, they're doing "Hitler loved animals" with the beast of shadow and flame
