But as you say, professors and others who make this their lives’ work have better insight. I can only comment on my experience as a student.

There was not exactly a rampant desire by folks who did not need accommodations to willingly sit for 4.5+ hours on an exam, and I think the benefit extra time provides for those who don’t “need” it is overstated and students get that. So I don’t know how radical of reforms are really needed.

I was commenting on some of the discourse I’ve seen his post generate. And I agree that it’s a bad system, but at the same time I did not witness a floodgate of people wanting to take accommodations for the fun of it, even when it was understood to not be difficult to obtain

Thanks, Professor. I’ll say first my experience was at GW, and I took your course there over 10 years ago now (eek). Loved it then and following your scholarship since. On the rest, imperfections of character limits and all that. I agree Prof. Sag does not paint with that brush

Isn’t it just — mistakes -> bad stuff -> move on from bad stuff -> previous mistakes that caused bad stuff are forgotten and repeated? Seems like just a neat turn of phrase on a common sentiment

And admin would grant you accommodations. But that’s the fault of the system as designed and that encourages that behavior, not the law student whose whole exposure to the system is transient and then they are gone in 3 years

And on accommodations I just think there’s room to talk about ppl abusing the system looking for advantage without painting every accom. student as a cheater or every accom. student as bona fide. Like, it was not exactly a secret you could just go to the right clinic and get the right note

Ofc then there were tests that having the right outline all but guaranteed a high grade but that’s the professor’s problem.

Re:closed book tests. The well crafted exams I took, it would not matter if you had every text on the subject ever written and 48 hours to take it. The “answers” that would get you a high grade were simply not in there and all the open book did is allow you the freedom to focus on analysis.
