Some art mostly hot takes. Born at 357 ppm. 🇨🇦

Just finished reading 'the ripple effect' by Maggie North, another great addition to the steminist romance genre and Canadian! Honestly the combination of the outdoors and a character struggling with a career that let her down has been just the right mix for me right now!

I appreciate that Journalists may not always have control over titles but it feels odd that this article doesn't call out the possible femicide. I feel like it's probably the only reason an article was written. Call it what it is: suspected murder suicide of a woman. www.cbc.ca/news/enterta...

The Gimli Glider is such a wild story. Always double check your units!

Today is the anniversary of he 1983 incident that became known as the "Gimli Glider" Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767 ran out of fuel between Montreal and Edmonton, landing at a decomissioned RCAF base in Gimli Manitoba, gliding a total 19 km with no engines. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_G...

First of all, just generally wtaf. Second, what is the point of these 'dairy', 'alcohol' and 'automotive sector' lists when they can just put whatever on them? Felt like I was being gaslit just reading them. www.cbc.ca/news/world/t...

Trump's new 50% tariff to hit even CUSMA-compliant goods | CBC NewsU.S. President Donald Trump is moving to impose tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of Canadian exports, a dramatic ramping up of his trade war against his northern neighbour.www.cbc.ca

It's hard to work towards goals for the benefit of humanity when BS like this could get pulled out at the highest levels. (See also the vehicle fuel efficiency, I'm not sure if I'm remembering it right but vehicles were incentivized to get 'greener' and manipulated the metrics to get bigger).

I think setting electrification targets is a cool energy policy! The EU's new goal is to grow the electric share of final energy from 23% today to 40% by 2040. But one way to do this is to build heaps of data centers, increasing final energy use by 43% and reducing pollution by 0%. Zero percent.

E-bikes are great, just be careful with the batteries. I remember the panic when laptops w. Lithium ion batteries started burning up in cold cars/planes. Older batteries in things like e-bikes are becoming an issue dur to increased # fires. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Gravel Influencer

Someone tried to insult me by saying I'm "stanning for e-bikes" and yeah buddy, I am wholeheartedly championing a revolutionary form of transportation that is making biking more accessible and enabling people to drive their cars less

My university decided that even though I opted out of the grad ceremony it must just be because something came up and decided to just randomly ship the graduation hood. (They also boldly assumed I lived at the same address the degree was shipped to on Jan, which was true, but bold all the same. 1/3

What commenters don't seem to be mentioning is how you would run into so many people you knew, it was just a matter of who. (And you'd all be hoping to get the new releases of which there would only be a handful of copies).

Hard cosign. Going with your friends or girlfriend to the video store on a Friday night to pick out movies for the weekend was so much fun.

Absolutely unacceptable behaviour but I'm also not surprised. Funding in my PhD was terrible and my department alloted TA positions. RA positions were shrouded in ambiguity wrt when it was deserved. Faculties rather than profs should be responsible for student funding. 1/

A professor in Tufts University’s School of Engineering required one of his international graduate students to work an unpaid TA job this past spring semester. After she went to her union and blew the whistle, Tufts withdrew her from her program. A thread of rage. 1/
