I’m reading The Language Puzzle by Steven Mithen (2024) and he has some fascinating theories. I’m also halfway through The Singing Neanderthals also by Mithen but it’s a bit older. They’re arguing they probably did have language but more concrete rather than abstract &had similar anatomy for speech
