Follow up to yesterday’s cover letter advice to #mlis grads: In the US, do not ever, ever, ever put your picture on your resume. Ever. Avoid fancy fonts, background photos/vibrant colors, and weird resume formats. Do not get lured in by Canva resume templates! They are not your friends!

My favorite part of academic employment is having the university’s marketing team insist on publishing a press release for the libraries that you didn’t ask for, sending you some AI-written slop, and then expecting you to correct it.

Libraries should hire more recent MLIS grads if for no other reason than they have access to cheap ALA memberships. My new boss is stoked (I’m cruising on a student membership as long as ALA will let me).

My last day at work is tomorrow and my staff are starting to say all the stuff they’ve been holding back. Today my Gen Z staffer told me I was her best boss. Then she said, “I’m glad you’re a good person because people just naturally trust you, so you would make an amazing dictator.”

Whenever I complained about math as a kid, my dad (a math teacher) would always do the “no matter what you do when you grow up, you’ll need to know math” thing. So I became a librarian. And I’m so annoyed because he was STILL fucking right.

I taught an orientation session today and when I walked in I saw at least 3 people were watching the World Cup on their laptops and I didn’t even try to correct them.

Nothing says academia like being given a grant to fund a pilot program that was wildly successful and popular with the students, only to have that grant taken away a year later and given to an inefficient department that students constantly complain about.
