And if this 1.6 GW gas plant is not grid-connected, it's exempt from the Clean Air Act's Acid Rain Program. bsky.app/profile/erik...

"The EPA said if the power plants are not supplying electricity to the grid then they would not be subject to the federal Clean Air Act's Acid Rain Program, which has been key to the dramatic reduction of smog and soot pollution from industrial facilities." www.reuters.com/legal/litiga...

My latest op-ed is on the new environmental movement that has emerged in response to the data center boom. So much work to do to enact the guardrails we need but, as I explain here, I feel really good about the community-spirited people stepping up to lead this work.

The New Environmental Movement Could Change AI's TrajectoryA new forecast of U.S. data center growth raises the prospect of enormous environmental and financial harm. Fortunately, a new movement has emerged to enact guardrails.www.forbes.com

NextEra and Brookfield are planning a 2 GW fossil-powered data center complex on federal land in western Kentucky. Apparently the tax breaks and subsidized use of our grid infrastructure is not enough, data centers are now coming after our public lands.

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to better understand the impact of LNG exports and data centers on gas prices (and thus utility bills). Key detail: gas production gets much more expensive once it (inevitably) moves to Haynesville shale.

📣 Our new report finds that the Trump admin’s energy + AI “dominance” policies + hostility to renewables will make it even harder for working families to afford their energy bills. Thanks to Trump, the wholesale price of fossil gas could DOUBLE over the next decade, outpacing inflation every year.

The claim here that Google is seeing "sizable returns" from data center deals is patently absurd. The only evidence cited is "the company’s investments in A.I.-related companies like SpaceX and Anthropic." Sorry, but frothy valuations are not evidence of AI profitability.

The NGO landscape could change radically due to large-scale giving by those made wealthy by the OpenAI and Anthropic IPOs. Some predict that NGOs working on AI's existential risks will receive far more backing than those fighting for human rights & against mass surveillance & other online harms.
