A.v.Humboldt professor at the University of Mainz. Evolutionary ecologist. Runs a research group that once prompted the description "in this [coffee] room there's almost always someone who is at least partially fun". (Which we then translated into Latin.)

.The very talented and fun Jonathan Henshaw has two positions to offer! If you like theoretical eco-evo questions, don't hesitate. Also, Freiburg is a very pretty place PhD: uni-freiburg.de/stellenangeb... Postdoc: uni-freiburg.de/stellenangeb...

I've been to a lot of meetings where the timekeeping signals are bird calls, but it's special when the meeting's outing goes to that place where you can see & hear the birds! The scenery was OK too. #ExE2026

Polymorphisms are fun to study, here is a butterfly one. Negative freq.dependence works to maintain things but where does it come from? Temporal variation works but not always! @koraklein.bsky.social and @chriswheat.bsky.social looked into this in detail. royalsocietypublishing.org/rstb/article...

Emergence time difference can create negative frequency dependence and maintain a colour polymorphism in Colias butterfliesAbstract. Many species of Colias butterflies show a female-limited colour polymorphism where the dominant Alba allele leads to white wings, faster developmroyalsocietypublishing.org

I title this arty photo "Dedication"! @ccrowther.bsky.social did great at Pint of Science last night: how long should you wait for your mate to return from migration before concluding "screw this, likely dead"? - Bummed you missed it? Come to @isbe2026.bsky.social or inspect a poster at #ExE2026.
