South Korea's reforestation may sound like good news, but it isn't. There are only 3 types of trees. Think of any forest you've ever seen with just 3 types of nonnative trees. Worst: the effort wasn't led by local activists, but steered by U.S. imperialism. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1...

“A Good Tree Is a Fast-Growing Tree”: South Korea’s Reforestation in the 1950s and the Making of Cold War Ecology in East Asia | Environmental History: Vol 31, No 2AbstractThis article reexamines the early history of reforestation in postwar South Korea, focusing on the 1950s, a decade typically overshadowed by the authoritarian tree-planting campaigns of the Pa...www.journals.uchicago.eduDigital Brain

South Korea restored its mountains through reforestation plans launched in 1973. The country planted more than 10 billion trees, and forests now cover over 63% of its territory after decades of restoration efforts.

Baby spinach, cubed pear, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, shredded carrots, cherry tomatoes, cheddar, balsamic vinaigrette. My perfect salad when I need food right NOW.

Laura Harjo, Spiral to the Stars: "I do not need a tribal government to indicate whether I am a citizen. I do not need my community to accept me, embrace me, or recognize me; I carry a Mvskoke belief system wherever I go, and that is why it makes no difference to me who recognizes me as Indigenous."

1/Book you've reread the most times. It'd be a lie for any writer to say they've read anyone else's book as often as they've read their own. How many versions, how many drafts, how many times? As for books by other writers, a tie between Gatsby and Ellison's Invisible Man.

I'd love to see this expanded to bookstores and libraries. Bookstore owners and librarians need to ban pervert glasses from their premises.

OKAY BLUESKY I NEED YOUR HELP! Hundreds of artists have signed @fightforthefuture.org's pledge to boycott venues that use AI surveillance like facial recognition. We want to get to 500 before a press conf in 2 weeks. Quote this and tag artists that might sign? Reskeet? do the thing!

When a word is in one dictionary but not another, I immediately write a scene. Select lexicographers cleared the term, but lexicographers elsewhere called a meeting and chose one of the following: 1/No. 2/Meh. 3/We regret to inform you... 4/Maybe next time. 5/NEVER. (They never choose never.)

To the marketers who send emails in July about the end of summer as if it's some limited edition product that's nearly sold out: Summer ends in late September. We're ONE month in. Imagine writing in January: "Spring's almost here, folks!" I say this with all my strength: fuck right off.

I've been writing a novel about the surveillance state for several years, and while I love the people in it, I can't wait to be so I can stop looking up details that make me inadvertently pull my hands to fists.

Why the fuck are there so many journals that cap their short story submissions at 3000 words? What the fuck? Depending on the line breaks, that's not even 20 pages. I know not everyone likes long-form writing. I don't expect 10K. But 3000? (5000 pisses me off too, but whatever.)
