Bicyclist and policy wonk hoping to make the US more safe for people when they need to go places. Policy Director @bikeleague.org

I guess technically New Jersey's restrictive e-bike law also restricts e-motos www.peopleforbikes.org/news/new-jer... But, I imagine the total chaos and confusion caused by its restrictions of low-speed e-bikes is taking up the capacity that could target now banned high-speed e-motos sold online

New Jersey Passes Most Restrictive E-Bike Law in the U.S. | PeopleForBikesOn January 19, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the most restrictive e-bike law in the country. The new law restricts the definition of “low-speed electric bicycle” to only Class 1 devices, and ...www.peopleforbikes.org

I don't think it's at all what they mean, but a lot of traffic safety can be boiled down into managing the equation that F=MA Kinda goes against removing speed management from FHWA's Proven Safety Countermeasures, but we could save a lot of lives with slower speeds and lighter vehicles

But, I'm also critical of DOTs, law enforcement, etc that lead bike safety messaging with tips for bicyclists and don't emphasize the role that drivers play in bike safety Better driver education is needed, and it should focus less on becoming a driver and more on safety through all modes

Agreed Frustrating when I hear someone complain about people biking and say something along the lines of "they should be taught the rules of the road" as a gotcha rather than recognizing education is something that bicycle advocates actively work on and support bikeleague.org/introducing-...

There's probably some truth there I've heard rumors that the effort to remove the 15th street bike lane in DC was due to its location on the motorcade route and one person not liking how the bike lane looked Since that removal was stopped (waba.org/2026/04/17/1...) this could be retaliation

In my experience with citation data: 1) It rarely exists in an easily accessible format 2) It is very common for citations to be reduced 3) As discussed above, systems do not do a good job of identifying truly dangerous drivers and getting the off the road, and it's not clear they try to

Most bicyclist deaths are in urban areas, but a lot of people bike in rural areas (including groups like the Amish) I've personally biked on many rural backroads Data compiled by @iihs-hldi.bsky.social shows 14-32% of bicyclist deaths are in rural areas since 2023: www.iihs.org/research-are...

This is an interesting state law proposal to use tort law to incentivize the adoption of safer vehicle equipment The article says the "proposal's complicated tort law implications make its outlook dim to survive conference negotiations" but it's cool to see the attempt and hopefully others try it

The Magnus White and Safe Streets for Everyone Act would require the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to adopt a performance standard for bicyclist detection (and other vulnerable road users) and make those systems standard equipment on new vehicles www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...

Research from @iihs-hldi.bsky.social found Subaru's system was "one of the earliest crash avoidance systems capable of preventing bicycle crashes" and "reduced such parallel crashes by 29 percent but had only a minor impact on crashes with bicyclists overall" www.iihs.org/news/detail/...

Subaru’s bicyclist detection shows positive resultsEarly versions of Subaru’s EyeSight system prevented nearly 30 percent of crashes with bicycles traveling parallel to the roadway but had little effect on crossing crashes — the most common variety.www.iihs.org

The US failure to test bicyclist detection in new vehicles just helps US manufacturers fall behind global competitors and makes people bicycling in the US less safe than they could be It's not pro-innovation, it lets companies off the hook for not innovating and pushing themselves on safety tech

If US manufacturers want to sell vehicles in Europe - then they need bicyclist detection (it's required there as of 2024) If US manufacturers want to sell vehicles in Japan, Australia, China, or Korea - then they need bicyclist detection (it's included in their new vehicle tests)

Automatic emergency braking is very common on new vehicles now - making it work for bicyclists is basically about software optimization (worst case scenario for cost is it requires better sensors) Earlier this year, pedestrian-AEB was just added to the US NCAP www.nhtsa.gov/press-releas...

Full survey data here: d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/Bi... The survey also found that more Trump voters support "more bike lanes" than "fewer bike lanes" There's certainly a part of the base that likely sees bike lanes as liberal and therefore bad, but more support bike lanes

In the US, we've dragged our feet on adding really any assessment of pedestrian or bicyclist detection to our New Car Assessment Program It's on a roadmap for 2027 implementation, but we're missing all of the other deadlines right now www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.... Europe's had it since 2018
