it's something that I was born with that I can never get rid of and that informs my personality and life in extremely meaningful ways but because it sucks it doesn't count as neurodivergence I guess

I'm not gonna lie part of this is longing for the protection that other people have, the safety even in getting to CALL it a neurodivergence instead of a fucked up illness even though realistically mine is far more genetic than autism and no more likely to end in violence

also just to put it out there that not including SMI doesn't make anything else that IS covered less important or meaningful or worthwhile, and I'm not suggesting that SMI is MORE important than anything else. just that it's often left out, and it is NOTICED when it is, you know

--and one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, it does feel weird to not have our voices present. I'm not being mad here, I'm just feeling sad a little bit this happens so often when it doesn't need to, if that makes sense

I want to say this as (seriously) gently as humanly possible, but: if you're making a book about disability and neurodivergence and you find yourself without any contributors with SMI (severe mental illness i.e. psychosis); maybe try to find some. as the most stigmatized neurodivergence--

oh I have nothing against dogman for the record, I just think it's targeted at a VERY different demographic than my book is

I'm actually gonna email them because I really don't think it's appropriate haha. there are other YA books shelved in the adult section, these two should not be in the same row as dogman, that's neither a useful shelving strategy nor a safe one

not only are teenagers going to avoid the kiddo book section but also we really don't want little dogman kiddos picking up books about severed head zombies and schizophrenia

my fav local shop puts everything from 4-18 in the same "children's" comic section so that it's mostly middle grade stuff but also hello sunshine and Clementine (the walking dead comic by Tillie Walden) show up next to an entire row of dogmans and dude I just. there's gotta be a better method haha

me reading the Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones: this is just like how there's a guy in my loft that keeps putting bug bites on my feet. very relatable
