Where are the little bumper brakes? The newer models have a little "brake" panel! These would scare me too

Like how often does even one of the most well known classicists get a chance to write something with enough eyeballs on it to crash the London Review of Books site? Or for that matter how often does that site go down because of that level of traffic?

I'm still kind of bummed I never made it to the Buster Keaton festival in Iola while it was still running.

I guess it depends though, if you really want to make a ton of cuts, weaken faculty and staff power, and have someone to point the finger at outside the institution...what is "works" vs "doesn't work"

Also I loved seeing Anthony Head as a villain, RIP sir, I would have watched you read the phone book.

Reading some of the discourse online as the show was airing was kind of bizarre, like....Ted and really most of the women on the show were never going to be options for romantic partnership that made any sense for the characters or the show.

Ok my primary thought on this show is that I really appreciate any show where there are well written actual both romantic relationships and friendships between straight men and women based on knowing and respecting each other as people and honestly same for men's friendships with other men.

*current chair of the AAU board

I hadn't realized that Girod (chancellor of my Alma mater) is the current chair of the board (having come up through the ranks at KU Med) and I'm very curious how these conversations went especially given the vice chair is from Johns Hopkins. www.yahoo.com/news/johns-h...

Texted my dad to give him a heads up and his response was "I am but a shade from the past, no need to warn me" because apparently my father is Norma Desmond

Do better, universities.

My parents both came from working class families and were beneficiaries of Great Society programs in their death knells as they were entering college. Both stayed in higher ed/libraries for their working lives and prioritized funding education in the limited philanthropy these careers allowed.

And that's by design, fwiw.

Some of them are personally lovely people but because the structure insulates them against many of the pressures colleagues in less rareified air face, unless they choose to take those blinders off they often don't really understand how the "other half lives"

Yet another reason to support robust labor protections and a democratic approach to unionization 🥰

fwiw in my experience the star system tends not actually to support "stars," it mostly just gives people who have access to more cultural capital and resources the ability to at best pawn much of the institutional work off on more vulnerable colleagues and students and at worst abuse them.

Looking at orgs like the AAUP and how they respond to these issues now and how their current responses are informed by their past failures during the Red Scare and then comparing them to orgs like the AAU is fascinating.
