UC Davis. Developmental drivers of individuality in the Amazon molly. Nature through nurture and a lot of noise. Really into random effects. Hard no to autocrats

This is the key. Thinking up new ideas is never the bottleneck - it's all the institutional slow downs: Grants take years, purchasing approvals, sponsored projects office need so many docs & let's not forget how long it takes our animals to breed. AI doesn't solve the most important bottlenecks

Everyone says AI will accelerate science. I don't think it will -- at least not in biology, and at least not soon. New post where I explain why, and how the productivity paradox can be resolved: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-ai-wil...

Replication studies: a win-win for early-career training and behavioral ecologyReplicating previous research builds confidence that results are real and meaningful. But close replications are rare due to limitations in resources and dacademic.oup.comKate Laskowski

For anyone that missed my talk at @isbe2026.bsky.social - never you fear! You can watch my talk and read more about the new Replication Studies section at @behavecol.bsky.social right here! laskowskilab.faculty.ucdavis.edu/2026/07/22/r...

Both students and PI's are getting penalized for this rule - either the student makes less money or suddenly grant budgets have to unexpectedly absorb more costs. Really not a great look by @ucdavis.bsky.social

UC Davis will no longer pay the difference so that GRFP recipients earn the same as other students. So mid-PhD students will lose nearly 25% of salary & new students will make less than their peers. Apply for the GRFP, it’s a wonderful help to your career. Just don’t come here if you get one.
