Bottom line is no one is well-served by this. FIFA need a legitimate appeals process. And the door to this was opened by suspending match bans on four other players that normally would have seen them miss group stage matches.

By that logic does it not matter that the video assistant referee violated the rules by reviewing the Balogun foul in slow motion and with still photos, which were then used to upgrade from “no foul” to “red card and one game suspension”? Which rule breaking matters more? They’re in conflict here.

FIFA could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by saying “the vide assistant referee did not follow established protocols when reviewing the foul by Folarin Balogun. As such, we are suspending the one-match ban until after the tournament.” Would have been both the correct outcome and process.
